I took a few shots side stage at The Gatsby Club when I was there to photograph burlesque dancer Cat Aclysmic. It was so dark, there was one dim lightbulb and the occasional shaft of light leaking from stage, I was at 3200 f/2.8 1/15th. For some reason the showgirl in the long dress turned her head to look at me, I didn’t do or say anything to attract her attention, she just turned round…I got one frame of her looking at me.
It’s only when you go behind the facade that you fully understand the sacrifices people make for whatever creative path they follow. Whether dancers, actors or photographers it drains you…what it gives you back is just enough to keep you alive…then it drains you again.
